For the past week we have been at Embedded World showcasing some great demos using mbed on the ARM stand. We had two main themes at this years show for mbed - Connecting MCUs to the Cloud and the new mbed NXP LPC11U24 Microcontroller .

To USB, or not to USB?
Universal Serial Bus (USB) was a revolution for device communication, and has long become the standard of choice for connecting devices to desktop, mobile and embedded computing platforms. It has made adding new devices to a system simple and reliable, whilst also driving innovation in what devices can be developed. Brilliant!
USB has been so successful that using it for connectivity is no longer a feature, but a requirement. So why do so many embedded devices continue to be developed like it is the 90's?!

Finalists for the UBM Electronics ACE Awards 2012 were announced recently and both the ARM Cortex-A7 MPCore and the NXP Semiconductors Cortex-M0 LPC11U00 Family (which includes the LPC11U24 used in the mbed NXP LPC11U24 Microcontroller) have been nominated in the Digital ICs (MCUs, FPGAs, microprocessors) category.

Set-Top Boxes, Daleks and mbed
UK media broadcaster BBC, has an active R&D department charged with exploring technologies that will benefit their public viewer audience. A team of their engineers have developed a specification for the Universal Control API for embedded platforms, which is designed to allow the core functionality of any network-connected set-top box, personal video recorder, Internet radio or similar device to be controlled from client software running on another device on the home network.
So what does this have to do with mbed?

mbed fest 2012 was held on the 29th January 2012 at Akihabara Network and Embedded Technology Centre in Japan.
