Updating to mbed firmware on EFM32 kits

In this guide, you will learn how to update an EFM32-based kit to the latest firmware, enabling mbed features such as drag-and-drop programming and an integrated USB serial connection.

Prerequisites

If you haven't already, please download and install Simplicity Studio from here. Make sure to install at minimum version 3.0.

Preparation

Update Simplicity Studio to the latest version. Use the built-in updater to do this:

Updating the firmware

  1. Connect your kit
  2. In the main Simplicity Studio window, if the kit doesn't show up on the left side, click 'refresh detected hardware'.
  3. Select the kit you want to update the firmware of.
  4. Open the Kit Manager
  5. If your kit hasn't yet been updated, and you have the latest version of Simplicity Studio, a dialog box should appear telling you that a new firmware version is available to install. Click 'yes' to install the new firmware.

Version numbering

Currently, firmware revision 10 and up are mbed-enabled. You can check your firmware version in the Kit Manager.
