How far will mbed signals travel to a screen ?

26 Aug 2010

Hi all,

ok, so I have an mbed, and I have a screen, and they work together just lovely as you'd expect.

What I want to do is move the screen a long way away from the mbed, but keep it wired for now.

(I want to do it simply)

So, if I use a bit of multicore wire. How long do you reckon I can make it ?

I'd like 20 or 30 feet ? (maybe 40)

do you think this would be possible.

cheers

Dave.

What kind of "screen" do you have? What interface is used to connect it to mbed?

ah yes,.. sorry,..

I just mean a standard text LCD, like this... nowt fancy.

connected like this on a breadboard. I'm wondering how far away from mbed I could move it with a bit of wire.

I think you shouldn't have a problem. This module does not look very time sensitive.

Thanks,.. I shall try it then, I just didn't want to faff around if it was a well known fact that signals don't really travel over 10 feet or something.

I'm a bit new to this.

cheers

If you can slow down the display (i.e. send data at a slower rate, it could work). But I wouldn't expect anything more than 10'. Cable impedence becomes an issue at longer lengths. You can try network cable if it has enough conductors for the dislplay.

Let us know what happenes!
