SD card reader through USB?

Has anyone connected an external card reader to the USB port on Pin D+/D- (or USBTX/RX) for a 1768?

I currently have an SD card on the SPI ports (11-13) and would like to free these for another peripheral. Was thinking that I could connect an external USB card reader to the open pins and mount the card for read/write.

A search of the cookbook and archives did not show anything.

In theory it should work the same way as a USB flash drive (i.e. should show up as a mass storage device).
