I've published a program used to control a piece of audio gear here

The interesting bit is the SSD1963 Graphics driver.
Since there are alot of fine LCD displays based on this controller (see Newhaven for example), you may find the code useful. All the routines were culled from various sources on the internet, and I have acknowledged these, but I especially got a lot of help from Akifumi Okano.
Taking this further might make an interesting collaborative project. I will not be able to play around with any of this stuff for quite some time due to work and schedule pressures.
