Powering mbed

I've just started to power my mbed on a breadboard with an external +5Vdc supply and wondered if I can also keep the USB connection to my PC, or whether it can only be powered by one source or the other ?

Sure, you can. There is a protection diode on the Vin pin (look for D2) in the schematic.
