Interrupts? What are they? For Dummies explaination please...

Hi All,

At the risk of sounding completely stupid I'm going to ask this question anyway... Can someone explain to me what an Interrupt is and give me a very simple "real world exmaple" of when we would use one? I want to be sure I'm not overlooking a good programming strategy that I should be using in the right situation.
