Confused about Eagle 16x2 LCD package

26 Nov 2009

Hey there,

I'm trying to use one of the LCD modules from Rapid that you talk about on the LCD page http://mbed.org/projects/cookbook/wiki/TextLCD.  However, the picture on that page along with the library footprint in mbed-modules.lbr seems to be mirrored compared to that pictured at http://www.rapidonline.com/Electronic-Components/Optoelectronics/LCDs-Accessories/Alphanumeric-LCD-display-modules/29437/kw/lcd

Which one is correct?  Or is the library part not for the Rapid version?

Thanks, Shareef.

Hi Shareef,

They are both right :-)

They are boths LCDs based on the same HD47780 controller, but they are made by different manufacturers, so they are mechanically different.

The one in Rapid is a "Powertip PC1602ARS-FWA-A-Q", while the one in the Eagle library is an "Ampire AC162B".

Following on from Simons thread about LCDs, we should probably create one schematic symbol, then a footprint for each variant we come across... Feel free to give that a bash and submit the updated library, it would be a good learning exercise all 'round.

Cheers,
Chris

Yeah sure, I'll do that and email you the updated version.  Did you choose to add the Ampire one to the library purely to save yourself 20 mins typing out the model name of the Powertip!?!  :-)

Great! This could be the start of a nice LCD Eagle library.

Why did i choose the the AC162B? The most dull of reasons... I inherited it from the MCB2300.

Cheers,
Chris
