mbed LPC1768 IR thermal image
Here is an IR thermal image showing where most of the power is dissipated as heat on the mbed. In the IR thermal camera image, warm temperatures are brighter yellow colors and blue or green are cooler.
The bright yellow hot spot on the lower left is the 3.3V voltage regulator. The yellow square on the right in the middle is the processor chip and the tiny yellow dot in the upper right is the crystal oscillator for the clock. Note that the power LED is barely visible in IR (heat). The printed circuit board conducts some heat from the chips, so areas of the board near a hot chip are also warmer. Room temperature (green) was 72F and the hottest spot (bright yellow) was just under 100F.
