About Aerodyne
Open Engineering, LLC dba AeroDyne Labs is a privately held Limited Liability Company that was formed in January 2003. The company began as just Open Engineering, LLC on the basis of providing electrical and computer engineering services to central Iowa. During this time the company worked with other central Iowa companies on various projects. In 2011 Open Engineering, LLC adapoted the name Aerodyne Labs to reflect a change in the business model. This change was to focus our expertice in the aerospace engineering field, specifically when it came to the electronics used in this area. At the same time as Open Engineering, LLC adopting the name change we brought in two new engineers to realize this new goal and to help steer the company in its new direction. One key area that AeroDyne Labs has focused on is in High Altitude Balooning. It is AeroDyne's vision that anybody, through a little research and planning, could be capable of starting their own high altitude balloon program.
AeroDyne is based on the experience gained by the entrepreneurs during a combined 20-years of high altitude ballooning. Through this experience, over 50 payloads have successfully flown and completed their objectives in either education/outreach, science, engineering, or amateur radio. Collaborators with these payloads have included University of Northern Iowa, Iowa Space Grant Consortium, Ames Public High School, and several organizations at Iowa State University.
Drawing on the engineering backgrounds of the founding members, AeroDyne has a significant and broad experience with high altitude ballooning concepts and applications, with a focus on low cost, modular designs. AeroDyne particularly specializes in embedded electronics, communications systems, tracking systems, software platforms, and 'Turn Key' solutions for numerous applications both onboard the balloon and on the ground. Along with experience in the design and engineering of ballooning systems and payloads, AeroDyne also has a deep knowledge of mission operations, ensuring mission success.
