How do you set the device type
Have followed all the links but can not seem to get a device selected for compile.

Have you opened the link on the device?
This contains a serialnumber, where you should be able to add the device after logging in.
Then the device(s) should turn up in top right corner.

I'm assuming this only works for FRDM boards purchased from you ... ?
You can use the mbed environment with any FRDM-KL25Z board not matter where it was purchased. Just follow the instructions here to prepare the board for registration on the mbed site. Register the board and you are good to go.
