Problem in posted example program
Is there an approved method for making / suggesting corrections to posted sample program files?

Correct the problem, commit it with a comment about what you changed, publish it as a fork of the sample program and then on the project page submit a pull request. That will notify the project owner that you think they should include your change in their project code. Whether they do anything about it depends a lot on who maintains the sample program.
