Come and work with us!¶
Our goal is to help people build their microcontroller prototypes faster then ever, so we're developing all the novel hardware, software, tools, libraries and web infrastructure that make up the mbed rapid prototyping platform to do just that.
The mbed platform hasn't been around long and we're a small team, but it is already proving a great success so are looking for some really talented people who share our vision, to join the mbed team and make it even better!
We're a small team and we need stand out people, so you need to stand out. Point us at your website or stuff you've done. Code or port something amazing to mbed that will demonstrate your skills. Tell us your ideas and how you'd make mbed better. Show us something that makes it clear you are the right person for the job!
Who are we looking for?¶
We are actively advertising for:
- A full-time Technical Marketing role
- A 6-12 month engineering internship
We are also unofficially keeping our eye out for:
- Ninja web infrastructure developers
- Superstar embedded software engineers
You would join us to work in the mbed office in Cambridge, UK (note that you must already be eligible to work in the UK to apply)
Technical Marketing (apply)¶
We are looking for someone special to join our team to lead Technical Marketing for the mbed Microcontroller Rapid Prototyping platform, found at http://mbed.org
We're developing novel hardware, software and online tools that will enable a diverse audience to invent the next generation of amazing embedded electronic devices using microcontrollers, whether its home appliances, smart sensors, toys or industrial control; think embedded intelligence everywhere and the internet of things.
You will be responsible for leading mbed's technical marketing, from how to introduce mbed to the world and reach all the different markets and users that can benefit from what we are doing, to engaging with key partners and the mbed developer community to make mbed the most productive microcontroller developer ecosystem in the world.
Ultimately, you will become an essential member of the mbed team and help us in our vision to enable rapid prototyping for microcontrollers.
Job Purpose¶
You will help introduce lots of new industries and developers to mbed to help get their prototypes built.
You will understand what it takes to help people find out about mbed, and what they need to know in the first few minutes to see whether mbed is for them. You'll help evolve the website, our user resources and tutorials, how we market and advertise mbed, and what events we attend. You will understand the opportunities using mbed presents for all sorts of potential users, and how to reach and present these benefits. You will help define what collaborations we should undertake, and how we should launch new products. You might run projects like working out how to enable people to run workshops across the world, from logistics through to promotion. You will treat marketing and promotion as a science, and be able to make calculated decisions about where we should spend our effort.
You will help showcase the great work of the mbed developer community among the community itself, and to others beyond mbed.
At the core of mbed is all the technology being enabled, and the developers that are enabling it. We want to help these developers show off their feats of engineering, and let that drive even more prototypes and innovations. You should be able to spot great engineering and be able to showcase it through the right combination of words, diagrams and videos. This might be taking a complicated technical concept and condensing it down to the essentials, or explaining the consequences of a technical achievement and why it is going to be relevant to everyone. You may have already written for a blog or magazine or have your own that you keep up to date, and know what turns a technical breakthrough into a good story.
You will bridge countries and cultures.
The mbed platform is being used all over the world, across different cultures and by very different types of user. We support large corporations through to enthusiasts, from USA to Japan. You should ideally speak a number of languages, and build relationships across the world, with users, distributors, FAEs and key partners. You will help us make sure we are doing the best we can for mbed developers and partners across the world.
You will influence key decisions in our product, strategy and thinking.
We are a small group working in an emerging area, so you will be expected to take a full and active role in all aspects of the team to help make mbed an even greater success. You will be able to articulate requirements to drive our planning, highlight industry trends and short and long term opportunities, and create the marketing collateral that helps us engage with existing and new partners for the benefit of the entire mbed ecosystem.

- Experience in technical marketing, sales or as an FAE
- Strong engineering background
- Excellent communication skills, ideally speaking multiple languages
- Ability to clearly express technical concepts and consequences
- Skilled in identifying and creating relevant and engaging content for a technical audience
- A portfolio of interesting projects, articles or achievements

Please clearly state your availability in your application; failing to do so means you fall at the first hurdle!
Summary¶
The mbed platform helps users quickly develop microcontroller-based prototypes by providing much of the groundwork necessary for their development to build on. To support this further, we identify and undertake key reference design projects that can help make new components and modules accessible to everyone. Projects have included networking layers, robot IMUs, language interfaces and audio platforms.
You will help develop hardware and software for these reference design projects, and make them available to the mbed community to enable users to quickly experiment with them in their own designs.
In addition, you will contribute to reactive work, helping to support the mbed community. This will include developing code examples, investigating reported issues and questions, and publishing articles, tips and tricks. You will take a full and active role in all aspects of the team.
