Sparkfun makes an audio jack breakout board. Some students here used it with an old set of PC speakers to play audio.
I took the wave file playing code from BMBB, cleaned it up some, and expanded it to play more types of wave files (sample rates up to 44 KHz with a slightly modified SDFileSystem, and sample sizes of 8, 16, and 32 bits, and any number of channels). Take a look at
