M3pi Mapping and navigation

Hi all, First time poster here. Im tackling a project of mapping and navigation using a robot ( more emphasis placed on the mapping). The mapping simply refers to using an autunomous robot to map out a floor plan of a room.

I have purchased the m3pi robot and begun using the mbed to program its particular movements.

Does anyone have any ideas on the next few stages of this project ? My thinking was : Using 2 or 3 short range sensors. Wall following Algorithm. Find a way of producing the map. The map producing is the bit im finding the most challenging though and I have no idea where to start with that.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
