It has been around for longer than the mbed I believe.

Arduino nano has been around for a long time. Way before mbed was out lol

not only that, it has nowhere near the capabilities of an mBed at around the same cost

That, and that's an extreamly high cost for a now obsolited version of the board. The nano is now up to version 3 and should be available for around $35 most places.
