Prototype to production: in the field firmware updates best practice

Hi,

I am interested specifically in what is the best way to do in the field firmware updates. I would like to use the USB MSD approach, does that require an upgrade to the bootloader for most boards/chips offered in the hardware section? Or is that a standard thing these days if the chip supports USB?
