Getting analog input from a resistor

A variable resistor (potentiometer type) has 3 pins. The middle one is the cursor. The cursor should go to the Analog input pin. The other two go to GND and Vout.

For physical sensors can also come as variable resistors (light sensor, flex) but they have only two pins. They should be mounted in serie with a resistor of the same order of resistance. The connection between the two resistors should go to the Analog input.
