Serial problems

Hello! I've been working very well with my mbed, I'm doing a little internet-controlled robot, everyrhing works fine but i have a problem, I need that whenever the mbed receive data through the serial port, execute a subroutine, and while not getting anything on the serial port, run another subroutine. I tried the serial interrupt, but I can not get to do this. Can anyone help me? Thanks!!
