ethernet question
does the ethernet driver actually use the signals
LED_LINK between the PHY and pin P1.25 on the processor,
LED_SPEED between the PHY and pin P1.26 on the processor
for any reason?

I dont think they are used by the driver software. I have run the software on a non-mbed board that did not have these pins wired. It seems to me they were provided to copy the state to the mbed LEDs or display them on screen somewhere.
