Can putty be used?
If so, what are the port/host settings?

Yes you can use it. Since this is a serial connection host and port are meaningless.
In putty if you select a connection type of serial those options are replaced by Serial line and Speed. Serial line is the COM port for your mbed (check the device manager if you're unsure), speed is the baud rate (9600 as default)
