Having trouble with getting started making a vmm that can store values and comm that value over CAN.

I have a project I am working on, and I dont have a strong background in C programming. I am using the FRDM K64 board from freescale. I have mocked up a state diagram for my project but after scouring through the reference manuals for the board. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed. What I am trying to understand is how to go about measuring and storing voltage values using the ADC and communicating that voltage value using the CAN system. To start what I would like to do is measure and store a voltage values in the 10s of millivolts range. Any help would be appreciated. Furthermore, this would be my first attempt at programming using the mbed platform. Thanks for your help.
