Finding mbed as a USB flash drive on Windows 7

I've tried multiple mbed LPC1768 modules using a mini-USB cable into multiple Windows 7 computers, looking for the mbed to appear as a flash USB drive in Windows File Explorer.

The instructions make it look easy. Plug in the module to USB. Find the mbed as a USB flash drive. Drop the binary into the drive using Windows File Explorer. Push the button and execute the binary.

How do I get past step 1?

Did you try different USB cables? Or maybe are all those computers you tried it on company computers with an overactive ICT department which tried to find out how many USB devices they can block before people start complaining?

If you hold the reset button when plugging them in, does something appear (only relevant really if all your mbed modules would be programmed with bad binaries).
