How to create a beep sensor which beeps quicker when you get closer?

Hi,

I'm wanting to create a sensor which can be used by people suffering with dementia to help them locate possessions they may of misplaced (eg. handbag, wallet etc.) My first problem is which sensor to use? It must be easy to interface with, preferably causing a noise to beep or an LED to flash quicker or slower depending on proximity. Sort of like the game children play where you're either hotter or colder to an object.... Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

That is one of those things which really are not that trivial. There are some things similar to this you can get from ebay/dx/etc which use your phone. They generally use bluetooth (low energy), and use the signal strength to determine the distance. However this is not the most accurate method. The problem is that in general I don't think there are many simple, cheap, solutions which are easier. It also depends on the range you want. Instead of BLE maybe also a 433MHz transmitter is an option.

It doesn't need to have a huge range nor be that accurate to Bluetooth should work perfect thank you! I'm sorry if this seemed like a simple question but this is my first project using mbed ever and is graded for uni so I definitley needed the help :) Thank you!!
