This thread on the MultiTech forum is helpful as it seems to answer the same question: http://www.multitech.net/developer/forums/topic/how-to-upgrade-mdot-board-without-development-baord/

One thing however that can significantly separate firmware and software only for the reason of understanding is, firmware is usually related closely to the hardware of the devices and its main purpose is to allow that hardware to function. Firmware development is one of the most important aspects of the electronics industry today for not is it only used in smart devices; Firmware is also extensively used in large industrial machinery. http://www.whizzsystems.com/firmwareandsoftware.html
