Enter the 5V to the USB terminal from the AC adapter.
When to start by entering the 5V from the AC adapter into the USB terminal, do not run program is LD1 flashes slowly in red. Would not be alone operation without a PC?

So quite correctly, according to the Nucleo user manual, external +5V power connects to Morpho connector (CN7 pin 6) and jumper JP5 in position 2-3.

But you can try close jumper JP1 (spare jumpers are in bottom side) and connect AC adapter to USB connector, as you tried. In my Nucleos it works.
