I believe its a hardware issue
This was working fine up till now. When I connect the mbed 1768 to my laptop the window opens with all containing files then disappears. Its still showing up in my device manager as the mbed serial port com 3. Please help?

That sounds like a software issue: It happens when you open a file on local file system in your code and you don't close it again. If that could be the issue (and tbh also as general idea): Hold the reset button of your mbed -> plug it into your computer -> keep holding the reset button -> remove all files from your mbed.
