What is the maximum input current acceptable and not burning the mbed

If you are powering the mbed from a fixed voltage source (i.e. a power supply) then the current draw from the mbed will be dictated by Ohm's Law.
You need to look at the input voltage. Basically I think the input voltage at Vin is recommended to be <9V, but I've powered it with 12V before and while it got a little hot it was OK. Typical current draw from the mbed is around 150mA depending on what you're doing with it.
