Was yesterday's (8/6/14) website downtime scheduled? How can I plan for the future?

I noticed that mbed.org was down yesterday (8/6/14) from about 9:30am to 10:00am CDT. This caused a great deal of frustration for me and my coworkers, since we do most of our work in the online compiler; we depend on this website's reliability during normal business hours.

First of all, why did this issue occur? Was it by mistake, or was mbed's web team fully aware of the issue? Secondly, is there some sort of maintenance blog I could follow? I would like to be aware of scheduled downtime before the fact, so I can prepare for occasions when I'm unable to use the online compiler.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Matt,

The downtime was unplanned. We try not to have any downtime but on the rare occasions that we do have to plan downtime we inform mbed.org's users ahead of time.

We don't have a specific maintenance blog, in the past we have used the main blog of the site. We also use Twitter to let people know what's happening during downtime.

We have external monitoring provided by Pingdom and we have the statistics collected publicly available, you can find links from https://mbed.org/handbook/Service-status (there is a link in the page footer if you want to find it in future).

The downtime on the 6th of August was caused by upstream network issues, similar to the downtime we experienced towards the end of July. We are currently looking at alternatives so we can provide a level service we can be proud of.

Thanks

Steve
