Controlling stepper motor speed and direction.

Can mbed board be used to control the direction and speed of stepper motor (which is fitted to the wheels of a robot) so that robot moves avoiding obstacles detected by ultrasonic sensors?

Yep, with correct electronics and programming
then it is possible.

Thanks. As per the project requirements four ultrasonic sensors are used for obstacle detection purpose. Can one board be enough to to write codes for the four sensors and the motor?

It should be. Depending on that sensor (how many signal wires) that will be needed.
