Join command works intermittently with Wifly

I have two Wifly modules of type RN-171, and two wireless routers, one with SSID="Testing" and the other SSID="Britches".Security is WPA_PSK. When I do a "join" command to either wifi router from either wifly module, I get "Disconn from Testing,AUTH-ERR" 99% of the time. Occasionally the join works. The routers are 8 feet from the Wifly modules.

How can an authentication error be intermittent?

Does anyone have an idea? Other equipment (PCs, laptops, Kindles) I have works fine with either router.

I'm using the latest WiflyInterface and mBed librarys.

I finally decided to use the WPS function in the Wifly module. This can be accomplished by using the Roving Networks WPS App Note at http://www.rovingnetworks.com/files/resources/WPS-App-note.pdf. I configured my module as described using the directions for the RN-171. I then issued the command "run wps". I then got the following in return:

run wps
WPS-APP V1.31 on RN-171
WPS-PIN=0
