Maximum current output from mbed LPC1768
From http://mbed.org/handbook/mbed-NXP-LPC1768, the maximum current is 4 mA.
However, I remember that it was 40 mA (but I did not actually measure it by shorting the one of the digital output pin to GND). Please verify.

You can check the LPC1768's datasheet. The answer: both. It can at least source/sink 4mA current while staying within 0.4V of its rail (so GND for low output, Vdd for high output).
At the same time its max short circuit current is 45/50mA. (This is allowed, as long as you don't go over the total max, I expect in practise that it is a thermal limitation).
