Exporting
If you'd like to develop on Arm Mbed OS with a third party tool, or migrate to one, you can choose to export an Mbed project to the following development environments:
- Keil uVision5.
- Eclipse CDT (C/C++ Development Tooling) make (unmanaged) projects using GNU Arm Embedded Toolchain 6 (6-2017-q1-update).
- GNU Arm Eclipse (managed CDT projects), using GNU Arm Embedded Toolchain 6.
- Make using GNU Arm Embedded Toolchain 6 (6-2017-q1-update).
- VSCode using GNU Arm Embedded Toolchain 6 (6-2017-q1-update).
- Code::Blocks.
- Cross Core Embedded Studio.
- e2studio.
- Embitz.
- MCUXpresso.
- NetBeans.
- Qt Creator.
- SW4STM32 System Workbench for STM32.
This may be useful to launch a debug session with your favorite tool while using Arm Mbed CLI for development, or creating examples or projects you work on within your tool of choice.
Exporting from the Arm Mbed Online Compiler
The Arm Mbed Online Compiler has a built-in export mechanism that supports the same development environments as Mbed CLI. When you right click on a project you want to export and click Export Program..., the Export Program window opens. You can select your board and development environment.
Triggering an export
The export process generates a ZIP archive with a project file matching your selected development environment. Follow your toolchain's import or project creation process to begin working there.
Exporting from Arm Mbed CLI
Mbed CLI currently supports exporting to all of the development environments mentioned above by using the export
command.
For example, to export to uVision5 with the K64F target, run:
$ mbed export -i uvision5 -m K64F
A *.uvproj
file is created in the root folder of the project.
You can open this project file with uVision5.
When you export from Mbed CLI, you create a project that compiles with the debug profile. You can find more information on the debug profile in the build profiles documentation. For example, this means that compiling within UVision 5 after this export:
$ mbed export -i uvision5 -m K64F
has the same flags as if you had compiled with:
$ mbed compile -t arm -m K64F --profile debug
For a complete list of supported export toolchains, you can run:
$ mbed export --supported ides
Before you export
Changing the compiler toolchain introduces many degrees of freedom in the system. The differences include how the compiler translates C/C++ code to assembly code, the link time optimizations, changing implementations of the C standard libraries and differences caused by changing compile and link options.
Although we support exporting your project and libraries to an alternate toolchain, we cannot guarantee the same consistency as using the Mbed Online Compiler.
We will do our best to maintain the exported libraries and project files, but please understand we cannot cover all cases and combinations, or provide support for use of these alternative tools themselves.
Third party tool notes
Make and Eclipse (GNU Arm Embedded Toolchain, Arm Compiler)
Note: Our Eclipse CDT projects use Makefile. Therefore, Makefile advice also applies to using Eclipse.
Make itself does not compile source code. It relies on a compiler such as:
- GNU Arm Embedded Toolchain, which you can install for free using the instructions. Please note that the current Makefile requires that you add your compiler to your PATH variable. This contradicts the instruction given on the installation website, because those instructions are intended for Eclipse, not Make.
- Arm Compiler 6.
Note: Ensure that the compiler you are exporting to is accessible using your PATH
environment variable because Makefile requires this. For example, when using an exported Makefile from make_armc6
, the command armclang
prints a help message about how to use Arm Compiler 6.
If you do not add your compiler to the PATH
environment variable, running Make results in an error such as the errors below.
make[1]: armcc: Command not found
make (e=2): The system cannot find the file specified.
When you encounter an error such as these, add the directory containing the compiler executable to your PATH
environment variable. Afterward, you may need to open a new terminal or log out and log in for the changes to take effect.
Make and Eclipse on Windows: Nordic platforms using SoftDevices
Make and Eclipse exports targeting Nordic devices require the Nordic nrf51_SDK on Windows. Please download and install it.
Make and Eclipse on Linux and macOS: Nordic platforms using SoftDevices
Make and Eclipse exports on POSIX-like operating systems targeting Nordic devices require the srec_cat
executable from the sRecord package. It may be available from your package manager (such as apt-get or Brew).
GNU Arm Eclipse (managed CDT projects) with GNU Arm Embedded Toolchain
The GNU Arm Eclipse exporter generates ready to run managed CDT projects.
Managed projects are projects that do not need manually created make
files, but generate them automatically from a detailed description, which includes the list of source folders, include folders, preprocessor definitions (symbols) and compiler command-line options.
The main advantage of providing all these details to Eclipse is that it can create a very accurate internal representation of the project. The purpose is to visually filter out (by using gray blocks) which parts of the code are not used and be able to pop up tooltips with the actual definition on mouse over most variables/functions.
The exporter generates multiple CDT build configurations, one for each Mbed profile, and ignores the --profile
setting when invoking the exporter.
For user convenience, the GNU Arm Eclipse plug-ins use a large number of explicit configuration options in the properties pages; the GNU Arm Eclipse exporter tries to convert as accurately as possible the Mbed configurations to these graphical configuration options.
For example, to export to GNU Arm Eclipse with the K64F target run:
$ mbed export -i gnuarmeclipse -m K64F
This command creates the .project
and .cproject
files in the root folder of the project.
You can open this new project with an Eclipse CDT, which has the GNU Arm Eclipse plug-ins installed.
Note: Using the Mbed command-line tools to build and export GNU Arm Eclipse breaks compile. Running mbed export -I gnuarmeclipse
touches .mbedignore
, which includes Nanostack. Trying to run mbed compile
again fails because the exporter touches .mbedignore
.
GNU Arm Eclipse on Windows: 8Kb command length limitation
Prior to version 2.6.1 of GNU Arm Eclipse, the build tools of the GNU Arm Eclipse plugin used the Windows cmd.exe
shell. This exposed the build system to a limitation of cmd.exe
. Please upgrade your version of GNU Arm Eclipse if you encounter a problem such as:
arm-none-eabi-g++: error: ./mbed-os/features/FEATURE_LWIP/lwi-interface/lwip/src/netif/lwip_lowpan6.o: No such file or directory
Note: There is a deletion of a character here. The command-line should read ./mbed-os/features/FEATURE_LWIP/lwip-interface/lwip/src/netif/lwip_lowpan6.o
