Which mbed and what does the battery need to power (for example the LPC1768 both has a main power supply and one for the RTC).

It is the LPC 11U24 and I want to power a small wheatstone bridge and the development board itself. I am new so feel free to give general advice

Check the pinout of the 11u24: http://mbed.org/handbook/mbed-NXP-LPC11U24. You can either use Vin or Vb. If it is really intended for low power you need Vb. So if you want to connect it directly you need a battery within that range. Otherwise you can also use an LDO or DC/DC converter. It of course also depends on how long it is supposed to run off the battery.

I want to be using low power preferably as I will be developing a kind of smart sensor I dont think it will really matter as systems will have their own psus but when I ll be testing it at home I wont have a psu so I may have to use a battery . So any battery on that range will suffice ??

In principle yes. Do take into account batteries can have quite a bit higher voltage than nominal when fully charged.
