Using mbed nRF52-DK after firmware update

Hi - I was having some trouble with my nRF52-DK I2C program (details of that separate issue not relevant) so I updated the firmware following the directions under here: https://developer.mbed.org/platforms/Nordic-nRF52-DK/#firmware-update. Then I uploaded the Blink_LED program to do a dummy test and it won't work. I've tried uploading the firmware linked to above as well as even more up-to-date firmware I found on Nordic's site and get the same results. I also tried to reinstall the Windows Serial Driver as described here https://docs.mbed.com/docs/mbed-os-handbook/en/latest/getting_started/what_need/ in case that was the issue, but no luck with that either.

The main symptom I'm seeing, other than the complete inability to upload/run any scripts on my board, is that the drive that shows up in Windows Explorer as "MBED (E:)" and in device manager as "mbed Serial Port (COM6)" disappears roughly every 20 seconds. It then reappears roughly 2 seconds thereafter every time.

My mbed platform is now completely unusable; any suggestions to revive it would be much appreciated! Thank you.

UPDATE: by uninstalling the device and deleting its drivers using Windows Device Manager then plugging it back in, I was able to get a couple things working for roughly 3 mins before it returned to the behavior described above (showing up and disappearing). I saw the interface chip flash at really high frequency for ~ 20 s right when things fell apart again.
