Which web browser to use?

I can't seem to find a web browser that works.

1. My favorite is Opera 12. After installing Oracle Java, it loads the mbed editor. Works ok except for copy and paste is broken (actually, it worked one time but I can't replicate it). Not ideal at all for coding.

2. Tried IE 8. Had problems with the "Save as..." dialog not appearing. It would hang and would have to reboot. Also, copy and paste often pasted double.

3. Upgraded to IE 10. "Save as" worked for a while, but a few days later, no longer. Now it always hangs with "Running security scan..." after compiling. Doesn't appear to be any way to disable security check??? Also, copy and paste often pastes double.

4. Installed Chrome. It asked for my Gmail account info, I refused. After that, no web pages load, all display a blank screen. Uninstalled, re-installed, then entered my Gmail info. Worked for one session ok. Next day, all web sites load a blank screen again. Uninstalled permanently. WTF Google?

5. Have not yet tried Firefox, next on list. Heard it was pretty bloated and required lots of add-ons to work, so always avoided it. Will give it a try though.

6. Current situation? I edit with EI 10, save, then compile and save binary with Opera. Not ideal in the least. I hate IE.

This is very frustrating. I would like to enjoy my mbed experience but it has been full of frustration and rage when simple things just don't work. Please help!

Current OS is Win 7 Pro, no other issues than this website.

I always use IE 10. Indeed it somestimes pastes double, pretty weird. However ctrl+z -> ctrl+v fixes that for me (it only does so once for me). Never hangs on security scan here though.

Chrome should work without entering your gmail account. At the same time it also should work with entering it :/. You can try firefox, afaik it should work fine without add-ons, just that there are many and quite some people use alot of add-ons, but I dont think you have to.

Hi Darin,

The mbed Online Compiler is now fixed to support copy and paste clipboard operations in Opera 12+. Thanks for the bug report!

We've investigated the other issues you reported with no success to reproduce them except for the occasional duplicate paste in IE8-10 (we are currently working on resolving it). Our suspicions are that there is an antivirus, firewall, browser plugin or malware software in your system that limits the capabilities to access pages.

For example the Chrome issue you reported that occurs with any page hints of a major problem. Chrome is the browser of choice for the majority of Internet users due its high performance and stability. The problem you're experiencing is uncommon and tied specifically to your system, otherwise it would have been widely reported.

Also the "Running security scan..." status message is not generated by the mbed Compiler or any mbed service for that matter and it is highly possible that it's generated by the software causing the regression.

As for our personal preference - both Chrome and Firefox are solid choices, where Chrome is faster, but Firefox is more customizable. Both work great with the mbed Compiler and the mbed eco-system.

Cheers,
Mihail

Thanks Mihail! Copy-n-paste does indeed work on Opera. That's awesome support! Did not expect you guys to fix anything on an unsupported browser, but am very happy!

As for the other stuff, I guess I'll have to take a close look at my system config. It's been used as a development system for a few years, so who knows how bad I've screwed things up. I don't run any AV, so it's possible I got something in there at one time or another that apparently doesn't like Chrome too much.

We don't test the site with Opera but Chrome, Firefox or IE should all work.

You shouldn't need to install Java for the site to work, we don't use Java at all.

I'm not sure what the security scan is, I don't have that when I compile in IE, I wonder if maybe it's security software installed on your computer trying to virus scan the compiled file.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Magically IE started working shortly after I posted this so it's what I've been using again. I'm sure it will stop working just as I'm about to finish my project though....

I have never installed a virus scanner on this system so don't know where that message is coming from.

I don't know why, but Opera was only able to load the compiler screen after Java was updated. Must have been a coincidence.

Still can't get Chrome to work. It does fine if I don't close it after installing, but if it restarts then it won't load any pages and I have to reinstall it again. But that's a Chrome issue not an mbed problem.

Are you using anti-virus software that has a browser plugin? It seems to me that AVG and a few others install browser plugins that pre-scan search results, screen downloads, etc. That could be why Chrome isn't able to display anything. You should also check your firewall settings (either the Windows firewall or any third party software you have installed), they might be blocking it. I always use Chrome on Windows, and Safari on OS X and I've never had a problem with the online compiler.
